Christopher Hobbs was born on September 9, 1950, in Uxbridge, Middlesex. He began his musical education as a Junior Exhibitioner at Trinity College of Music, studying piano and bassoon for three years before continuing at the Royal Academy of Music, where he learned composition under Cornelius Cardew and percussion from Patricia Brady. In 1968, he founded the Experimental Music Catalogue, a publishing initiative focused on promoting scores by emerging composers. Hobbs was an active member of AMM music, an improvisation group, for about three years and contributed to the early development of the Scratch Orchestra. He performed experimental music concerts in England and abroad alongside notable figures such as Cardew, Gavin Bryars, John Tilbury, and Christian Wolff. Since 1971, he has participated in various West End musicals and has collaborated extensively with John White as a percussion and, more recently, piano duo.
