Chuy Reyes is a Latin American pianist born in 1920 in the Huastec region of Mexico. He moved to Mexico City in 1925 and enrolled in the Conservatorio de Mexico two years later. Reyes received a scholarship to study in Germany for five years, and made his American debut in 1933 at the Chicago World Fair. Throughout his career, Reyes led a "Latin American society band" that performed primarily in Hollywood, L.A., notably at the legendary Mocambo Club, as well as playing gigs in New York City and traveling outside the U.S. He had small bands at Era Carroll's for two years and other venues, but in 1944, he led a full orchestra at the Trocadero in Hollywood, which included piano, four reeds, two brass, and five rhythm instruments. Reyes also provided music for films and appeared in several features, including The Big Tip Off (1955), Pan-Americana (1945), and Everybody's Dancin' (1950). He played a stage show titled "A Night at the Trocadero" at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles, featuring Miguelito Valdez, a full orchestra, and dancers. His 1944 band included Ed Barto on accordion, Nick Escalante on bass, Ferle Roper on marimba, Chuy Pina on drums, Chino Ortiz on trumpet, and Paul Lopez on trumpet.
