Claudio Monteverdi was an Italian composer, gambist, singer, and Roman Catholic priest, born in Cremona on May 15, 1567 (baptized) and died in Venice on November 29, 1643. He is renowned for his contributions to madrigals and operas, and his work is often seen as revolutionary, marking the transition from the Renaissance style to the Baroque period. Monteverdi developed two distinct styles of composition: the new basso continuo technique of the Baroque and the heritage of Renaissance polyphony. He gained fame during his lifetime, particularly for his opera L'Orfeo, which was first performed in 1600 and is frequently regarded as the first opera, remaining a staple in performances today.
