Clock DVA is a musical project formed in 1978 by Adi Newton after his departure from another group, initially joined by Judd Turner. The name 'DVA' was inspired by Anthony Burgess' novel 'A Clockwork Orange.' The band began with a focus on experimental music influenced by science fiction and the occult, later evolving to reflect the industrial and electronic music scenes emerging in underground music. Their first proper album, 'White Souls In Black Suits,' was released on cassette through Throbbing Gristle's label and featured members Adi Newton (vocals, violin, EMS Synthi E, tapes), Judd Turner (bass, vocals, treatments, rhythm machine), and guitarist David J. Hammond, along with additional musicians Roger Quail (drums) and Charlie Collins (saxophones, flute, and percussion). The lineup saw changes over the years, with Paul Widger replacing Hammond in 1981 and the subsequent release of 'Thirst,' produced by Ken Thomas and recognized as one of the great albums of the 80s. After 'Thirst,' Newton and Turner took the project in a new direction, resulting in the departure of several members.
