Clockcleaner was a punk/noise rock band hailing from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, formed in 2004. The band consisted of John Sharkey III on vocals and guitar, Karen Horner on bass, and Richie Charles Jr. on drums. They were known for their comparisons to influential acts such as The Jesus Lizard, Big Black, Nirvana, Flipper, and the harsh noise band Whitehouse. Their musical influences included Cromags, GG Allin, Sun Ra, Brainbombs, Albert Ayler, and the first Skrewdriver LP, and they gradually embraced a sludgy post-punk sound. Their debut release was an EP titled The Hassler, put out by the now-defunct Philadelphia hardcore label Manic Ride Records, which echoed the noise rock of the early 90s. After touring for the EP, original bassist R. Slegel left the band, and John Sharkey took over bass duties in the studio. In early 2006, Clockcleaner released a 7” on Baltimore’s Hit-Dat Records, featuring "Missing Dick" b/w a cover of Crucifucks’ "By the Door." This was followed by their first full-length album, Nevermind, released on Reptilian Records, which Sharkey described as a sarcastic ode to Nirvana’s 1991 release, intending to provoke reactions from listeners.
