cLOUDDEAD was an influential underground hip-hop group formed by three members whose identities remain undisclosed. They emerged from the vibrant Cincinnati scene, known for events like Scribble Jam, before relocating to the Bay Area to co-found a collective. Their Midwestern roots deeply influenced their early recordings, which were created in makeshift settings. Their debut album, which compiled six 10" EPs released between 2000 and 2001, is characterized by its dense and obscured sound. This sprawling 3xLP features a mix of miniature beat suites and Dadaist lyrics, leaving a lasting impact on various sub-genres such as cloud rap, hauntology, and lo-fi hip-hop over the following two decades. As noted by Chris Martins in the liner notes, cLOUDDEAD's unique perspective and insular approach to music created a rich and mysterious cosmology within their work. The group disbanded in 2004 after releasing their second and final album.
