Coal Chamber is a metal band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1993. The band is led by vocalist Dez Fafara and features a sound that blends the heavy riffs of Black Sabbath with the theatrical elements of Marilyn Manson. Fafara met guitarist Miguel "Meegs" Rascon through a classified ad, and they later brought in drummer Mike Cox and bassist Rayna Foss, who was the roommate of Fafara's future wife. In 1995, Coal Chamber signed with Roadrunner Records, following a recommendation from Dino Cazares of Fear Factory, and quickly gained attention in the metal scene, being recognized as one of the label's most promising new acts since Machine Head. Their debut album received strong reviews, and their second album, 1999's Chamber Music, was enhanced by a popular cover of Peter Gabriel's "Shock The Monkey," featuring Ozzy Osbourne on vocals. During this period, Foss temporarily left the band after giving birth to her daughter, and was replaced by Nadja Peulen, a change that became permanent in 2002. The band faced further challenges when Cox left in September of the same year, leading to their split in 2003. In late 2011, it was announced that Coal Chamber would be reformed.
