Coleman Hawkins was an American jazz tenor saxophonist, born on November 21, 1904, in St. Joseph, Missouri, USA. He passed away on May 19, 1969, in New York, NY, USA. Also known as Bean or Hawk, Hawkins began his musical journey with piano lessons at the age of five and switched to cello at seven. He started working on the tenor saxophone at the age of nine and turned professional by twelve. In August 1923, he began recording with an orchestra that featured other notable musicians. After a period of working in Europe from 1934 to 1939, he returned to New York and performed his classic version of "Body and Soul" almost by chance during a session for RCA Victor. Throughout his career, Hawkins mainly led his own groups and collaborated with various artists.
