Colourbox was formed in 1982 by brothers Martyn and Steven Young, who drew on a diverse range of influences including blues, soul, rock, reggae/dub, and funk. They combined these elements with movie dialogues and unique samples. Vocalist Debian Curry joined for their 1982 4AD debut "Breakdown," but was replaced in 1983. After releasing the mini-album "Colourbox" in 1983, the band produced several singles and began working on their first full album, which also bore the title "Colourbox" and received critical acclaim, topping the UK independent chart in 1985. Their distinctive musical style left journalists struggling to define their identity, as they preferred to remain out of the spotlight while refining their sound. In 1986, they released two singles: "The Official Colourbox World Cup Theme" and a reworking of "Baby I Love You So." The following year, the Young brothers achieved mainstream success with the genre-defining track, which became a collaboration with Chris and reached UK National No. 1. However, the success of the track, along with litigation surrounding the samples, led to the band's dissolution. Ian Robbins passed away in 2014, and Steven Young died on July 13, 2016.
