Column One is an experimental project based in Berlin, Germany, that began in 1991. It was founded by core members Lamp and Schalinski, who formed a loose and constantly evolving collective of artists and musicians. The collective engages with Western art and culture through a deconstructionist lens, focusing on the importance of communication and its implications. Their work emphasizes the process of decoding information and the manipulation of reality as presented to us. Column One views existing forms of communication and media as raw materials for their artistic endeavors, drawing inspiration from philosophical ideas of Radical Constructivism, the Cut-Up technique, and Dadaism. Founded in 1992 by East Germans Robert Schalinski, Rene Lamp, and Eike Bölling, later joined by Andrew Loadman and Jürgen Eckloff from the UK, Column One often presents itself as an elusive presence within the art community. They have been represented at Club Transmediale with their impactful video “Braunserver” and have a catalog of limited edition CD, music cassette, and vinyl releases, alongside regular live events, video installations, and exhibitions. Their collaborations include notable figures such as Jürgen Ploog, Mimetic, G.Breyer P-Orridge, Frieder Butzmann, Rashad Becker, Zeitkratzer, and Marc Wannabe.
