Comateens were formed in New York in 1978 by Ramona Jan (guitar), Nicholas Dembling (also known as Nick O. Teen, Nick North, Nick West) (bass, vocals), and a drum machine. The group later expanded to include Lyn Byrd (synthesizer, vocals), Oliver North (guitar, vocals), and Harry Viderci (drums). They recorded their first single featuring Ramona Jan-penned songs "Danger Zone" and "Elizabeth's Lover" (not released at the time) along with Diana Dominicci's "Cool Chick." Jan left the band in 1980, and Comateens released their self-titled debut LP in 1981, which became a cult favorite among college hipsters, particularly for their remake of “The Munsters Theme." The band gained a larger following in Europe, where their unique style, including the necrophilia tale “Cool Chick," was more readily embraced. They released two more LPs: "Pictures on a String" in 1983 and "Deal With It" in 1984 before disbanding in 1985. Byrd and Nicholas West (Dembling) later reunited in a project called West and Byrd.
