Compulsion was an Irish punk band formed in 1990 by Josephmary (singer) and Sid Rainey (bassist) under the name Thee Amazing Colossal Men. After signing a recording contract with Virgin Records and winning a lawsuit against the label, they rebranded as Compulsion in 1992. The lineup expanded to include guitarist Garret Lee and drummer Jan-Willem Alkema, and the band relocated to North London to sign with One Little Indian. They released several EPs and two albums: Comforter, which was recognized by NME as part of the "New Wave of New Wave," and The Future is Medium, noted for their identical black outfits and orange hairdos. The group disbanded in 1996. Following the split, Lee formed Jacknife Lee and went on to produce for Snow Patrol and U2, Alkema joined China Drum and later Driven to Collision, while Rainey became a writer and created the animated children's TV series Underground Ernie for the BBC. Josephmary currently resides in Ireland.
