Con Funk Shun is an American soul funk disco band that was active primarily between 1976 and 1986. The group was formed in 1969 in Vallejo, California, by high-school classmates Louis A. McCall and Michael Cooper. With McCall on drums and percussion and Cooper providing lead vocals and lead guitar, the band later expanded to include Karl Fuller (trumpet), Paul Harrell (saxophone/flute), Cedric Martin (bass guitar), Danny Thomas (keyboards), and Felton C. Pilate II (trombone/lead vocals). Initially, they released one single in 1972 and recorded two albums' worth of material between 1972 and 1973, which were later released under the name Con Funk Shun, inspired by a 1970 Nite-Liters track. The band moved to Memphis in 1973 and secured a major record deal with Mercury Records in 1976. Their first albums were produced by Skip Scarborough, and in the 1980s, they collaborated with notable producers such as Eumir Deodato, Maurice Starr, and Leon Ware. During their decade with Mercury, Con Funk Shun received four RIAA gold album awards and gained recognition through major national tours and international performances.
