Conway Twitty was an American country music star born on September 1, 1933, in Friars Point, Mississippi. He began his career as a rock & roll singer in the 1950s but became a dominant figure in country music during the 1970s and 1980s, achieving a remarkable 40 number one hits over two decades. He changed his name in 1957, taking inspiration from Conway, Arkansas, and Twitty, Texas. Known for his deep, resonant voice, Twitty was one of the smoothest balladeers in Nashville during the country-pop era and was instrumental in presenting country music as an "adult" genre. His songs often featured sensitive and sensual themes, which contributed to his widespread success. Twitty maintained a prominent position on the country charts from the late 1960s onward, delivering a steady stream of Top Ten hits that blended R&B, pop, and rock & roll influences into country music. Although he experienced some pop success, he remained true to his country roots, and his occasionally corny song titles did not hinder his popularity until his death on June 5, 1993, in Springfield, Missouri, at the age of 59. He had a son and two daughters, and he also acted in films such as "Sexpot Goes To College" and "College Confidential." Additionally, he owned the Twitty City tourist complex in Hendersonville, Tennessee, and was inducted into the Country Music
