Cornelius Cardew (7 May 1936–13 December 1981) was an English avant-garde composer known for founding the Scratch Orchestra, an experimental performing ensemble. Later in his career, he shifted his focus from avant-garde music to a politically motivated approach he termed 'people's liberation music.' Cardew's musical legacy continues through his sons, who are also musicians.
