Cortijo y su Maquina del Tiempo is a musical project led by percussionist Rafael Cortijo, who was born in Puerto Rico in 1928. In 1951, he established Cortijo Y Su Combo with vocalist Ismael Rivera, focusing on bombas and plenas, two traditional Puerto Rican music forms. During the latter half of the 1950s, they became the most popular group in Puerto Rico and made a successful debut at New York's Palladium in the final year of the decade. In May 1962, seven members left to form El Gran Combo, but Rivera and Cortijo continued recording together until the early 1980s. The 1974 LP "Y Su Maquina Del Tiempo," released by Harvey Averne's New York Coco label and without Ismael Rivera, features an innovative mix of jazz-funk groove and Puerto Rican sound. Although it was not acknowledged at the time, it has since gained cult status.
