Cuco Valoy was born on January 5, 1937, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He is a Dominican salsa, son montuno, and merengue singer and songwriter. Cuco began performing Cuban son with his brother under a different name. He is the father of a musician with whom he formed a band, which was later changed to La Tribu and then La Nueva Tribu.
