D'Angelo, born on February 11, 1974, in Richmond, Virginia, was an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer known for his significant contributions to the neo-soul movement in the mid-90s. He gained early recognition by winning an amateur talent competition at Harlem's Apollo Theater three consecutive weeks during his teenage years. D'Angelo's debut solo album, "Brown Sugar," released in 1995, received widespread acclaim and sold over two million copies. His follow-up album, "Voodoo," released in 2000, debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, with its lead single, "Untitled (How Does It Feel)," winning a Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal and the album itself winning Best R&B Album. In 2014, he was hailed as the next Marvin Gaye by GQ. D'Angelo's third studio album, "Black Messiah," released in 2014, was critically acclaimed and peaked at number five on the US Billboard 200. He passed away on October 14, 2025, in New York City after a short battle with cancer. .
