Daniel Owino Misiani, also known as Mwalimu D.O. Misiani, was a prominent Tanzanian musician born on 22 February 1940 in Nyamagongo, Mara Region, Tanzania. He earned the title "King of History" in Kenya and was recognized as "the grandfather of benga" for his pioneering contributions to the genre. Misiani grew up in a family of singers, although his parents opposed his musical aspirations due to religious beliefs. In the 1960s, he relocated to Kenya to pursue his music career. In 1960, he met Daudi Kabaka, a well-known guitarist and singer, who mentored him. Misiani joined the Sokoto Band in 1961 and later made his first recordings with the Victoria Boys in 1965. He went on to form one of Kenya's most successful bands, initially named Luo Sweet Voice, which evolved over the years. He primarily sang in Dholuo and Swahili and released numerous recordings throughout his long career, including some international releases. Misiani faced imprisonment multiple times due to lyrics deemed politically critical. Tragically, he died in a road traffic accident on 17 May 2006 at the age of 66, while still actively performing. He was polygamous, having two wives, Felista and Beatrice, and fathered 14 children.
