Maria Papadomanolaki, known as sound artist Dalot, embraces the idea that all sound holds value, whether it's the cries of seagulls from her Brighton window or the sirens of New York City. Her music, often described as ambient or post-rock, draws influences from a diverse range of artists, including Stars of the Lid, Boards of Canada, and Colleen, making her sound unique and difficult to categorize. With roots in noise rock and a formal education in music, Papadomanolaki skillfully balances the creation of perfect soundscapes with moments of disruption. A Dalot track can soar with angelic vocals or divine melodies, or plunge listeners into a dystopian soundscape filled with mechanical whirs. Her debut release, the 2009 EP Flight Sessions, was followed by Loop Over Latitudes in 2010, released on n5MD, which is sequenced like a novel she studied in Greece. This narrative approach is also evident in her 2011 work, “Minutestatic,” which emerged from late-night improvisations inspired by personal events, leading to a creatively prolific period. While her music may tell stories, Papadomanolaki does not impose how it should be interpreted, yet acknowledges the inseparable connection between the storyteller and the musician.
