D'Angelo was an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer born on February 11, 1974, in Richmond, Virginia. He gained early recognition by winning the amateur talent competition at Harlem's Apollo Theater three weeks in a row during his teens. His debut solo album, "Brown Sugar," released in 1995, received widespread acclaim and sold over two million copies. D'Angelo's follow-up album, "Voodoo," released in 2000, debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, with its lead single, "Untitled (How Does It Feel)," winning a Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal and the album itself winning Best R&B Album. In 2014, he released his third studio album, "Black Messiah," which was met with critical acclaim and peaked at number five on the US Billboard 200. He was hailed as the next Marvin Gaye by GQ in 2014. D'Angelo passed away on October 14, 2025, in New York City after a short battle with cancer.
