Daniel Barenboim is an Argentine-Israeli-Spanish pianist and conductor, born on November 15, 1942, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was previously married until his wife's death in 1987 and is now married to a pianist. Barenboim is currently the general music director of the Berlin State Opera and the Staatskapelle Berlin. He has also served as Music Director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre de Paris, and La Scala in Milan. He is well-known for his work with the West–Eastern Divan Orchestra, which comprises young Arab and Israeli musicians, and is a prominent critic of the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories. Throughout his career, Barenboim has received numerous awards, including seven Grammy Awards, an honorary KBE as a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire, and France's Légion d'honneur in both Commander and Grand Officier ranks. He has also been honored with the German Großes Bundesverdienstkreuz mit Stern und Schulterband and Spain's Prince of Asturias Concord Award, which he received alongside Palestinian-American scholar Edward Said. A polyglot, Barenboim speaks Spanish, Hebrew, English, French, Italian, and German fluently. He identifies as a Spinozist and is influenced by the life and thought of Baruch Spinoza. Barenboim's sons include a violinist and a HipHop producer known by his alias.
