Born in Réunion in 1955, Danyèl Waro is a pioneering voice of maloya, the island’s traditional music of resistance and identity. A self-taught poet, singer, and instrument maker, he revitalized maloya after years of cultural repression, blending its deep rhythms with Creole lyrics celebrating freedom, dignity, and everyday life. Known for his raw, percussive sound and poetic authenticity, Waro has earned international acclaim and multiple awards, including recognition from WOMEX, for his profound contribution to world and Creole music.
