Darrell Banks was a Detroit-based soul singer born on July 25, 1937, in Mansfield, Ohio. He passed away on February 24, 1970, in Detroit, Michigan. Banks released two singles in 1966, followed by three singles and a full album with another label, and later produced two singles and a full album with a different label. Tragically, he was shot and killed by Aaron Bullock, an off-duty policeman, during a dispute involving Banks' girlfriend, Marjorie Bozeman, with whom Bullock had been having an affair. His death was reported in the Michigan Chronicle on March 7, 1970. For 34 years, Banks lay in an unmarked grave until a memorial bench was placed on his grave on July 17, 2004, funded by fans from around the world. This allowed his fans to locate his grave when visiting the area. One of his notable songs, "Open The Door To Your Heart," was co-written with his friend Donnie Elbert. In December 2014, a copy of "Open the Door to Your Heart," thought to be the only one in circulation, was auctioned in the UK for over £14,000 (approximately US$23,000), despite previous beliefs that all original versions had been destroyed.
