Darrell Johnson (August 12, 1948 - June 17, 2020) was an American mastering engineer who began his recording career in 1966 while studying film at UCLA. He started mastering in 1967 and, alongside former Capitol Records A&R Executive Jack Chartoff, launched a multi-track recording studio in Studio City in January 1968. This venture also included the establishment of several record labels, including Great Mandella, Quaint, Peace, and Gloryland Records. After Chartoff's untimely death, Darrell returned to studio engineering and mastering. In December 1969, he mastered a project for a 1970 release, followed by additional work that year. By mid-1970, he was under contract with MCA, where he mastered numerous country hits and pop material, including early releases for Elton John and Lynyrd Skynyrd, often inscribing his work with "DJ" or "DWJ." Darrell became the first Mastering Engineer and Director of Engineering at JVC, where he utilized a special half-speed mastering system. In 1977, he founded a company with partners and also worked as a commercial pilot, serving as Vice President and principal partner in Southland Aviation for over two decades. The evolution of music video and stereo audio for television in the 1980s shifted his focus to systems engineering for broadcasting until his retirement in 2010.
