David Cunningham is a producer, composer, and founder of the Piano label, born in Ireland in 1954. He lives and works in London. His notable career began with The Flying Lizards' international hit single "Money" in 1979. Currently, he serves as an AHRB Research Fellow in Fine Art at the University of Newcastle. Specializing in studio processes, loops, and treatments, Cunningham's work spans pop music, gallery installations, television, film, and contemporary dance, collaborating with various visual artists. Since releasing his first album, "Grey Scale," in 1976, Cunningham has engaged with a diverse array of musicians, from rock groups like This Heat and Owada to improvisers such as David Toop and Steve Beresford. He has worked with Michael Nyman on music for Peter Greenaway's films and collaborated with artists like Ute Lemper. His dance and performance works, including "Canta," commissioned by Ian Spink, have continued through the 1980s and beyond, with commissions from Goro Namerikawa, Bill T. Jones, and Arnie Zane, as well as collaboration with Finnish choreographer Tiina Huczkowski. Cunningham's live performances have included collaborations with Kathy Acker, Michael Nyman, Peter Gordon, Panasonic, Michael Giles, and Scanner.
