David Roback was an American guitarist, songwriter, producer, and engineer, born on April 4, 1958, in Los Angeles, California. He initially created the band Rain Parade with his brother, producing one album before joining forces with members of other bands to form the supergroup Rainy Day. After departing from Rainy Day, he formed Clay Allison, which later changed its name to Opal after he recruited new band members. In 1988, Roback had his final tour with Opal when lead singer Kendra Smith dropped out of live shows, leading him to recruit Hope Sandoval as her replacement. David Roback and Hope Sandoval went on to establish the band Mazzy Star in 1990. He passed away on February 24, 2020, in Los Angeles, California, due to metastatic cancer.
