Daweh Congo is a roots reggae singer born on March 28, 1969, in Kingston's Jubilee Hospital. He is the son of a singer and grew up in Allman Town, where he began singing at the age of eight after visiting his father's native Trelawny, performing together during school holidays. Initially aspiring to be a painter and a keen student of the visual arts, Daweh's path shifted towards music out of necessity. He almost joined the army before recording his debut, the unreleased "Bread Winner," for Alton Ellis in 1990. He went on to record songs for African Star, Andrew Nash, and Kariang before meeting producer Barry O'Hare, who released his singles in 1995, garnering acclaim. Daweh's first trip to Europe occurred in 1996, and the following year, O'Hare produced his debut album, which was celebrated for its "live" reggae rhythms and cultural songs, soon being recognized as a modern roots classic. Although he released a few singles for TMI and Mikey Jah Son, who produced an excellent track, little was heard from him afterward. However, he remained active behind the scenes, completing albums for Leggo engineer Bravo and TMI, which released his popular roots single.
