De La Soul is an influential American hip-hop trio formed in 1987 in Amityville, Long Island, New York, consisting of members Posdnuos, Trugoy, and Maseo. They gained recognition for their eclectic sampling, quirky lyrics, and significant contributions to the evolution of jazz rap and alternative hip-hop. The group formed during high school and caught the attention of producer Prince Paul with their demo tape of "Plug Tunin'." Their debut album, '3 Feet High and Rising,' is celebrated as a hip-hop masterpiece due to its playful wordplay, innovative sampling, and witty skits. As original members of a progressive collective, De La Soul's output throughout the '90s includes albums like 'De La Soul Is Dead' (1991), 'Buhloone Mindstate' (1993), and 'Stakes Is High' (1996), which, although not as commercially successful as their debut, are now regarded as cult classics. After the critically acclaimed 'The Grind Date' in 2004 and winning a Grammy for their collaboration on "Feel Good Inc." in 2006, the group went on hiatus, releasing only a few singles and an EP. They returned in 2016 with the crowd-funded album 'And the Anonymous Nobody.' In 2023, after lengthy legal battles over rights and ownership, De La Soul regained access to their back catalog and released their classic albums on streaming services for the first time.
