Dead Prez is an American hip-hop duo founded in 1996 in New York City, consisting of members Sticman and M-1. The duo focuses on themes of militant social justice, self-determination, and Pan-Africanism. Sticman, from Shadeville, Florida, and M-1, from Brooklyn, New York, met while attending Florida A&M University in Tallahassee in 1990 and maintained close contact before forming their duo a few years later. They lead an organization called the People's Army in Brooklyn. After meeting at a party, they signed with a label, resulting in the birth of Dead Prez.
