Deee-Lite was an American house and club/dance group formed in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York, in 1986. The trio was led by vocalist Lady Miss Kier (Kier Kirby) and included DJs Super DJ Dmitry (Dmitry Brill) and Jungle DJ Towa Towa (Chung Dong-hwa). They became widely known for their hit single "Groove Is in the Heart" from their 1990 debut album, "World Clique," and achieved significant success on the U.S. Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart, scoring six number one hits. With a unique blend of house, techno, rap, ambient, and funk music, Deee-Lite captured the attention of New York clubgoers, drawing influence from the Lower East Side's drag-queen community. Their debut album featured the classic "Groove Is in the Heart," which included a fluid bass guitar sample and a rap by a young Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest. The album's success led to two sellout world tours in 1991, during which they opened for major acts. In 1992, their follow-up album marked a shift to more politically charged themes, addressing issues like the environment, safe sex, and democracy. Lady Miss Kier received the Environmental Media award from the WWF in 1992 and spoke at prestigious institutions in 1993.
