Deee-Lite was an American house and club/dance group formed in 1986 in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York. The trio was led by vocalist Lady Miss Kier, born Kier Kirby in Youngstown, Ohio, and included DJs Super DJ Dmitry, a classically-trained guitarist and Ukrainian emigre, and Jungle DJ Towa Towa, born Chung Dong-hwa in Yokohama, Japan. Deee-Lite gained popularity for their unique fusion of house, techno, rap, ambient, and funk music, heavily influenced by the Lower East Side's drag-queen community. Their debut album, "World Clique," released in 1990, featured the hit single "Groove Is in the Heart," which became a crossover success. The group achieved significant recognition on the U.S. Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart, scoring six number one hits. With Bootsy Collins as their musical director, they toured for two sellout world tours in 1991, opening for notable acts. In 1992, they released their follow-up album, which showcased a more political tone, addressing themes such as the environment, safe sex, and democracy. Lady Miss Kier received the Environmental Media award from the WWF in 1992 and spoke at prestigious institutions like Princeton University and Cooper Union.
