Department of Eagles is a musical duo formed by Fred Nicolaus and Daniel Rossen, who met in 2000 as roommates at New York University. They began creating music together during their freshman year, blending symphonic and electronic pop with folk intimacy. Initially, their music was meant for friends, but their debut EP, Mo' Tussin, was released by California indie label Isota Records in 2002, followed by The Noam Chomsky Spring Break EP in 2003. These EPs, along with additional studio recordings, were compiled into The Whitey on the Moon UK LP, also released by Isota in 2003. Due to a name conflict with a San Francisco band, they changed their name to Department of Eagles, and the album was renamed The Cold Nose, released in the UK by Melodic in 2005 and reissued in the US by American Dust in 2007. In 2004, Rossen joined Grizzly Bear, contributing to their breakthrough album, Yellow House, in 2006. During this period, Department of Eagles released an odds-and-ends EP titled A Johnny Glaze Christmas: Classical Snatches and Samples a Go-Go. By late 2007, they had gathered enough material for a new album, with contributions from Grizzly Bear members Chris Taylor, Christopher Bear, and bassist Nat Baldwin.
