Derek Carr is an Irish electronic musician known for producing and releasing Detroit-tinged electronic music for nearly two decades. He has been associated with labels such as ‘For those that Knoe’, ‘Revoke’, ‘Subwax’, and ‘Firescope’. Born and raised in Westmeath, Derek developed an appreciation for finely crafted melodic techno through influential compilations like Network’s ‘Bio-Rhythms’ and Warp’s ‘Pioneers of the Hypnotic Groove’. His admiration for bands like Kraftwerk and Depeche Mode during his formative years drew him to the emerging sounds from Detroit, Sheffield, and Leeds. Embracing the homemade ‘punk’ ethos of early ‘Bleep techno’, he began acquiring second-hand instruments, starting with a cheetah sampler and a Boss drum machine. This led him to create his own unique sound, heavily influenced by techno pioneers such as B12, the Black Dog, As One, Nexus 21, and Rhythmatic. In 2001, Derek launched his own label, ‘Trident Recordings’, releasing the ‘Copper Beech e.p.’, a collection of deep soulful techno that has become a collector’s item due to its limited pressing of only 500 copies. His subsequent releases on ‘Digital Soul’ and ‘Geek Records’ further solidified his reputation among a new generation of techno producers who blend soul and melody with electronic dancefloor grooves.
