Deva Premal is a German singer born on April 2, 1970, in Nürnberg. She is renowned for her work in introducing Sanskrit mantras to the mainstream, creating meditative and spiritual music in collaboration with Prabhu Music. Her album "Deva" (2018) was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best New Age Album at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards. Premal, along with her partner Miten, employs a process of "natural selection" to choose the mantras featured in their albums, with a particular affinity for Sanskrit mantras. She believes that detaching her ego from the understanding of the mantras allows for a more authentic creative expression of their true meanings. Premal describes the purpose of their work as being open to the Goddess of music and remaining true to themselves as musicians, teachers, and individuals. They take little credit for their success, viewing themselves as messengers of a 5,000-year-old tradition. With over a million albums sold, they focus on simply showing up and chanting. Deva Premal's vocal range is contralto.
