Dieter Moebius was a Swiss-born, Berlin-based electronic music pioneer, born on January 16, 1944, in St. Gallen, Switzerland. He passed away on July 20, 2015. Moebius was a prolific voice in contemporary electronic music, beginning his career with the Krautrock band Kluster, which he joined in 1969 after being befriended by Conrad Schnitzler. The trio released their debut LP "Klopfzeichen" in 1970. After Schnitzler left the group following their third album, 1971's "Kluster und Eruption," Moebius and Hans-Joachim Roedelius continued as a duo under the name "Cluster." With producer Conny Plank, Cluster began to create more structured soundscapes, moving towards an electronic pop sound with their 1974 album "Zuckerzeit." Moebius and Roedelius collaborated with Michael Rother from Neu! in 1976, releasing a pair of LPs that caught the attention of Brian Eno, leading to a collaboration that resulted in the session released later as Harmonia 76. This collaboration marked a turn towards ambient textures, influencing the sound of the 1976 Cluster album "Sowiesoso."
