Dieter Reith (February 25, 1938 - April 1, 2020) was a German jazz pianist, organist, arranger, and composer, born in Mainz, Germany. He began his musical journey with piano lessons in 1945 and became involved in the jazz scene, making a significant impact. After completing his education in musicology and experimental physics, he joined the SWF Big Band in 1961, serving as its pianist until 1971. Reith also played as the organist for Peter Herbolzheimer's Rhythm Combination & Brass from 1970 to 1976. In 1973, he moved to Stuttgart, where he took on a key role in directing the SWR Big Band and the SWR Radio Orchestra for various productions. A prolific musician and accomplished arranger, he contributed to numerous TV projects, radio productions, and recording sessions. Notably, he conducted the SWR Big Band for the television show "Verstehen Sie Spaß?" from 1980 to 2002. Throughout his career, Reith collaborated with many jazz luminaries, including Stan Getz, Jean-Luc Ponty, Art Farmer, and Maynard Ferguson. He passed away on April 1, 2020, in Stuttgart, Germany, leaving behind an enduring musical legacy.
