Digital Underground is a hip hop group founded in 1987 in Tampa, Florida, by Shock G and radio DJ Kenny K of WMNF 88.5. In 1989, they relocated to Oakland, California, to record their debut album. The group's music is heavily influenced by George Clinton and his groups Parliament and Funkadelic, evident in both their grooves and the surreal humor in their lyrics. Digital Underground's first release was the 1987 single "Underwater Rimes" under TNT Records, featuring Shock G and Kenny K. By 1989, the group expanded to seven members after signing with a record label. Their first album, "Sex Packets," was released in March 1990 on Tommy Boy Records, featuring hit singles like "Doowhutchyalike" and "The Humpty Dance," the latter reaching No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Rap Singles chart and leading the album to achieve platinum sales. In 1991, they released the EP "This Is An EP Release," which included songs featured in the film "Nothing But Trouble." This EP marked the introduction of new member Tupac Shakur (also known as 2Pac). Both the EP and the following album "Sons Of The P" received RIAA Gold certifications, with "Kiss You Back," a single from "Sons Of The P," also achieving Gold status.
