J Dilla, born James Dewitt Yancey on February 7, 1974, in Detroit, Michigan, was an influential American hip hop DJ and producer. He emerged from the mid-1990s underground hip-hop scene and began his career as a member of a group, making a name for himself with various collaborations. He was part of the production team trio The Ummah alongside notable producers. Initially using the stage name Jay Dee, he adopted the name J Dilla in 2001. Dilla's work is credited with significantly influencing his peers and playing a defining role in the rise of the neo-soul sound. He collaborated with LA-based producer and MC Madlib, forming the group Jaylib in 2002 and releasing the album "Champion Sound" in 2003. After relocating to Los Angeles in 2004 due to health issues, Dilla's condition was publicly revealed as TTP and Lupus, which affected his immune system and led to significant weight loss. Despite his declining health, Dilla maintained a strong cult status, with unauthorized circulation of his underground "beat tapes." His last album released during his lifetime, "Donuts," came out on February 7, 2006, his 32nd birthday, just three days before his death on February 10, 2006, from cardiac arrest. Following his passing, his mother announced the founding of the James Dewitt Yancey Foundation in May 2006 to honor his legacy
