Dimitris Kamarotos is an electro-acoustic composer and clarinetist born in 1954 in Athens, Greece. He studied music and computers in Athens before continuing his education in composition, clarinet, electronic music, and music analysis in Paris with notable figures such as Daniel Charles, Emile Damais, Iannis Xenakis, Horacio Vaggione, and Marc Battier. He also studied music for films with Maurice Jarre and explored the use of artificial intelligence as a compositional tool at IRCAM, where he was an invited composer in 1983. Since 1985, Kamarotos has been instrumental in founding the Center for Contemporary Music Research (CCMR-KSYME) alongside S. Vassiliadis and I. Xenakis. He has created and directed contemporary and experimental music ensembles and served as a research supervisor. Collaborating with Brad Garton, Thanassis Rikakis, and Perry Cook, he helped establish the computer music studio at CCMR and the IPSA at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. His research includes the creation of physically modeled ancient instruments, such as the prehistoric Sesclo aulos, and ongoing projects focused on automated retrieval of music patterns and timbre recognition.
