He is best known for his iconic roles in John Waters films such as "Pink Flamingos," "Female Trouble," "Polyester," and "Hairspray." In the early 1970s, Divine performed in several avant-garde performances with the San Francisco drag collective, The Cockettes, and later appeared in Tom Eyen's off-Broadway plays "Women Behind Bars" and "The Neon Woman." In 1982, Divine collaborated with American composer Bobby Orlando to produce a series of Hi-NRG singles, including "Native Love (Step By Step)," "Shoot Your Shot," and "Love Reaction." By the late 1980s, Divine achieved international chart success with singles produced by Barry Evangeli and Stock Aitken & Waterman, such as "You Think You're a Man" and "I'm So Beautiful." Tragically, Harris Glenn Milstead passed away at the age of 42 from cardiomegaly, just three weeks after the premiere of "Hairspray."
