Divine Sounds, a pioneering rap trio from Brooklyn, New York, emerged in the early 1980s, comprising brothers Michael "DJ Mike Music" and Richard "Disco Ritchie" Dowling, alongside Shelton "Shelton D" McCoy. Their name was inspired by DJ Mike Music's cousin's involvement with the 5 Percenters. DJ Mike Music began deejaying during the mid-1970s while in high school. He and Disco Ritchie met Shelton D. after entering a rap contest in Bedford-Stuyvesant in New York.
