He is a prominent DJ and record producer who has produced nearly all of Gang Starr's tracks, along with numerous songs for various groups and solo artists since the 1990s. His production credits include work for artists such as Nas, Jay-Z, and many others. DJ Premier's style is characterized as "underground" or "alternative" Hip-Hop, and he is recognized for his innovative use of sampling, particularly from Jazz artists and an artist's previous work. This unique approach has made him one of the most sought-after producers in the Hip-Hop genre. Originally, he went by the stage name Wax-Master C, with the "C" derived from his real name. DJ Premier also founded his own record label.
