DJ Shadow, born Joshua Davis on June 29, 1972, in San José, California, is an influential American record producer and DJ known for his pioneering work in experimental instrumental hip-hop. He first gained recognition with his acclaimed debut album, "Endtroducing…", released in 1996. Shadow has an extensive personal record collection of over 60,000 records and has been a significant figure in the evolution of hip-hop, drawing inspiration from early hip-hop artists and groups like Eric B. & Rakim, Ultramagnetic MCs, and Public Enemy. While in high school in Davis, California, Shadow began experimenting with beats and breaks on a four-track recorder. He co-founded the Solesides label during university to release his original tracks and started gaining attention with his "Hip-Hop Reconstruction" mix tapes in 1991. This led to a production deal with Hollywood BASIC records and collaborations with Bay Area rapper Paris. In 1993, he released the 17-minute track "Entropy," which helped him gain further recognition. His first full-length album, "Endtroducing…", received critical acclaim in both the UK and the US, followed by the compilation "Preemptive Strike" in 1998. Shadow contributed to U.N.K.L.E.'s debut album later that year, working with notable artists such as Thom Yorke and Mike D.
