DJ SS, short for Scratchenstein, is a prominent figure in the music scene, originally making his mark as a hip hop scratch DJ with the act The Formation Five. He began his journey as a breakdancer before transitioning to music in the early 1980s, initially playing electro, hip hop, and rare groove. By 1988, he shifted towards producing, exploring genres such as acid house, hardcore, breakbeat, and eventually drum and bass. DJ SS gained significant recognition DJ'ing at major British raves in the early 1990s, including Telepathy, which propelled him to perform worldwide. He is the co-founder and head of the Formation label, alongside Eidris Hassam, and has released over 100 tracks under various aliases. Additionally, he co-owned the 5HQ record shop in Leicester and operated the Fresh FM pirate station. The Formation label has become a notable platform for emerging drum and bass producers.
