Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich was a renowned Russian/Soviet composer, pianist, and public figure, born on September 12, 1906, in Saint Petersburg, Russian Empire. He passed away on August 9, 1975, in Moscow, USSR. Shostakovich was a prominent teacher and professor, and he was recognized as a People's Artist of the USSR in 1954. His accolades include the Hero of Socialist Labor (1966), the Lenin Prize (1958), five Stalin Prizes (1941, 1942, 1946, 1950, 1952), the USSR State Prize (1968), and the Glinka State Prize of the RSFSR (1974). He gained international fame at the young age of 20 with the performance of his First Symphony, which was showcased in concert halls across the USSR, Europe, and the United States. By the age of 30, his operas and ballets were being performed in leading theaters worldwide. Shostakovich's 15 symphonies were celebrated as part of "the Great epoch of Russian and world music." His extensive body of work includes not only symphonic and choral music but also 15 string quartets, various chamber pieces, ballet, and film music. He was notably one of the most prolific composers of film music in Soviet Russia.
