Dobie Gray was an American singer and songwriter born on July 26, 1940, in Simonton, Texas. He passed away on December 6, 2011, in Nashville, Tennessee. Growing up in a family of sharecroppers, Dobie was greatly influenced by his grandfather, a Baptist minister, which shaped his life around family, the church, and music. In the early 1960s, he moved to California, where he met Sonny Bono, then an A&R manager for Specialty Records. This encounter led to his first notable single, "Look At Me," which was later recorded by The Righteous Brothers. Although "Look At Me" enjoyed a five-week presence on the charts, Dobie's major breakthrough came in 1965 with the release of "The 'In' Crowd." In addition to his music career, Dobie enrolled in acting classes in Hollywood and participated in theater productions such as "A Raisin In The Sun," "The Amen Corner," "Look Homeward Angel," and "Rhinoceros." His talents eventually earned him a role in the L.A. production of the hit musical "Hair," where he performed for two and a half years. His signature song, "Drift Away," was released in 1973 and written by Mentor Williams.
