Doc Watson was an American guitar player, songwriter, and singer known for his contributions to bluegrass, folk, country, blues, and gospel music. Born on March 3, 1923, in Stoney Fork Township (later known as Deep Gap), North Carolina, he began performing in the 1940s on radio shows and at regional concerts, initially playing country music. Throughout the 1950s, he transitioned to rockabilly music, performing on electric guitar in Jack Williams' band. Over his career, Watson recorded more than 50 albums and received numerous accolades, including seven Grammy awards and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. In 1997, he was honored with the National Medal of Arts, and in 2000, he was inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Honor. Additionally, in 2010, he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Music from Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. Watson passed away on May 29, 2012, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
