Don and Dewey were an American rock and roll duo consisting of Don "Sugarcane" Harris (June 18, 1938 - 1999) and Dewey Terry (July 17, 1937 - May 11, 2003). Both were born and raised in Pasadena, California. Dewey Terry was a founding member of a group called The Squires in 1954 while still in high school, later joined by his friend Don Bowman, who would change his name to Harris. The Squires released a record on the Los Angeles-based label Dig This Record in 1955, but the group disbanded in 1957, after which Don and Dewey continued their collaboration. They were signed by Art Rupe's Specialty Records label later in 1957 and produced rock and roll music for the next two years. Both Don and Dewey played guitar, with Dewey also doubling on keyboards, while Don occasionally showcased his skill on the electric violin, earning him the nickname "Sugarcane" Harris. Renowned drummer Earl Palmer frequently played on their sessions. Although Don and Dewey did not achieve any hits themselves, several songs they wrote and/or recorded later charted when performed by other artists. "I'm Leaving It Up to You" became a #1 hit for Dale & Grace in 1963, while "Farmer John" was a hit for The Premiers, reaching #19 in 1964 after being covered by The Searchers
