Don Byas was an American jazz tenor saxophonist born on October 21, 1912, in Muskogee, Oklahoma. He came from a musical family and found success in the orchestra of 1941, later playing with bop musicians in small groups, although he identified primarily as a swing musician. For the last 25 years of his life, Byas was based in Europe, initially settling in Paris before moving to the Netherlands. He passed away from lung cancer on August 24, 1972, in Amsterdam.
